Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. It is durable, affordable, and has a bright white finish. The downside is that it tarnishes over time, especially in humid climates. Regular polishing keeps it looking new.
Gold Plated
Gold plated jewellery has a thin layer of gold bonded to a base metal, usually brass or copper. It looks like solid gold at first, but the plating wears off after months of regular wear. Gold plated pieces are best for fashion items you do not wear every day.
Gold Filled
Gold filled jewellery contains a much thicker layer of gold — legally required to be at least 5% of the total weight. It does not tarnish, lasts for years, and is a great middle ground between plated and solid gold. The price is higher than plated, but still much lower than solid gold.
Which Should You Choose?
If you want affordability and do not mind occasional polishing, go for sterling silver. If you love the look of gold and want something durable without the solid-gold price tag, choose gold filled. If you only wear jewellery occasionally, gold plated is fine.
Care Tips by Material
Store silver in an anti-tarnish pouch, keep gold plated away from water and perfume, and clean gold filled with warm soapy water. With the right care, any of these metals can last for years.
